There are two different types of printer configurations, one being a local printer. A local printer is attached to one computer and can print from only that computer. A network computer however is connected to a computer that is attached to a network in either a home or business. When you have a setup like this and your printer is shared on the network, you are able to connect to it and print. This saves a lot of time and allows you to print from anywhere in you home or office and without having to run to another PC to print what you need.
How do I connect to a Network Printer?
- Click Start->Settings->Printers and Faxes. This will list all printers currently setup on your computer.
- Click Add a printer to start the Printer Wizard.
- Click the Next button.
- On the Local or Network Printer screen, select A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer option, and click Next.
- Select the Connect to this printer (or to browse for a printer, select his option and click Next option.
- Enter the server and printer name in the format: [server name][printer name]. If your server name (computer name if it is connected to a computer) is printserv and your printer name is computerroomprinter, then the path would be printservcomputerroomprinter.
- Click Next to continue.
- When the connection established, and/or if you have other printers currently installed, you will be prompted to set the new printer as the default printer. This means that when you click the print button in an application, this printer will be the one automatically selected first.
- Choose the option you would prefer, it is usually Yes, and click Next
- When you are finished reading, click Finish.
Hope this helps out and serves you well. I know when I first networked the printer to the network it saved a lot of time. Have a good day everyone!
