Services are a computer program or process that runs in the background and provides support to other programs in Windows 7. If you want to free up some run, or maybe you just have a slower system, disabling services that are launched at start up or that needlessly run on your system may increase performance. If you end up disabling the wrong service and can not use your computer, try booting into safe mode from advanced boot option to turn the service back on.
- Open the start menu and in the search box type, services.msc and press enter.
- If prompted, click on continue in the UAC prompt, or provide the administrator password to approve.
- Right click on the service you want to disable or start and click on Properties.
- To Disable a Service: Click on the stop button and wait for the service to stop. Next to the start up type, click on the drop down menu and select disable. Click on the apply button.
- To Start a Service: Next to start up type, click on the drop down menu and select automatic or manual and click on apply. Automatic means the service will start on its own at boot up, manual means you will have to physically go in and start the service every time you want it to run.
- Click Ok after either starting or stopping services.
- Close the window.
